Doug Pederson says he wants to return
former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson says he is returning
Of all the receivers on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster at the moment, Calvin Ridley is the one who gets spoken about the most due to his experience. But should we be talking about anything else?
Zay Jones of the Jaguars is the wide receiver whom PFF will choose as a potential cut candidate before free agency opens on March 13. If Jones were released, the Jaguars would free up $4,183,294 in salary space, but there would also be $6,569,334 in dead money.
“A substantial chunk of the 2023 season was lost by Jones, and Jacksonville is preparing to sign veteran wide receiver Calvin Ridley to a far bigger contract. Parker Washington’s ascent may help him take over this position in 2024 and beyond, claims PFF.
Jones sustained an injury in Week 2 of 2023 that kept him out of action for two different stints and restricted him for most of the season. The previous season, Jones played in nine games with the Jaguars and caught 34 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns.
Over the last two seasons combined, Jones has ranked third on the team in both receiving yards (1,144) and targets (185). In terms of touchdown catches (7) and catches (113), he is tied for fourth place. He is fourth in terms of receiving yards per game (45.8).
Jones and the Jaguars reached a three-year, $24 million deal in 2022, with $14 million in guaranteed money.
One issue with PFF’s justification for cutting Jones is that Jones played his whole career for the Jaguars as an outside wide, in contrast to Parker Washington, who played most of his snaps in the slot last season (173 versus 63 outside).
