It’s simple to choose the NFL’s top player—a layup or gimme putt.
Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs is the quarterback, followed by everyone else. With three Super Bowl victories in a row, Mahomes has also won two MVP awards during the regular season and three during the postseason. Even though the Chiefs were vulnerable for a large portion of the season, he proved last season that he is capable of winning it all.
Mahomes has the potential to become the greatest quarterback of all time, as well as a player.
With a chance to three-peat this season, Mahomes—who is once again placed No. 1 in my annual list of the top 100 NFL players—could win four Super Bowls in his seven seasons as a starter.
With seven Super Bowl rings, Tom Brady is regarded as the greatest quarterback of all time, but a fourth for Mahomes would spark an intriguing debate on the GOAT. Brady never triumphed in three straight Super Bowls.
Jerry Rice, the all-time great receiver, is my choice for the best player of all time. However, I believe that he is the best player since there is no debate regarding who is the top receiver in the league—a point that can be made for any other position.
Mahomes might defeat them both if he keeps up his winning ways. As of right moment, nobody disputes who should be ranked highest among the players in the league.
During the process of creating this year’s ranking, it became apparent how clearly the league is undergoing change. The unquestionably top-2 player Aaron Donald has retired. Even though the younger players are still improving and will eventually make it into the top 10, some of the veterans who were near the top of my rankings in previous years haven’t performed as well.
This year, it was difficult to complete the remaining top 25. The customary all-star top 20 is absent, though that might soon change as new players like C.J. Stroud and other players in their second and third years start to show up.
Based on my assessments and some discussions with league staff, this is my list. But it’s mostly my list.
Thus, become enraged with me. Discuss the people that you believe are too high and too low, as well as the omissions. That’s the main focus.
However, it’s not simple. I can assure you of that. Apart from the top spot, of course, compiling a top 100 list is harder than you might imagine. That’s simple. That player is obviously looking down from the top spot in these rankings right now, and it’s possible that he may soon be looking down from the top spot in all NFL player rankings.
