I remember when I broke into the first team, I started spending my money on unnecessary things. The ยฃ600 toiletry bag. The sparkling Louboutins of the time. The Rolex.
This is what broke my parents. That’s what made them calm me down to talk. I remember what my mother said: โSerge, you knowโฆ it might not be forever. You can’t spend money like that. You have to keep your feet on the ground because everyone falls at some point.
A few weeks after that conversation, everything fell apart. I injured my knee and couldn’t do anything for about 8 months. Time was simply frozen. When I finally returned to the field, I couldn’t join the group. All of a sudden I was on loan to West Brom.
It was as if my mother had seen the future.โ
