I remember when I broke into the first team, I started spending my money on unnecessary things. The Β£600 toiletry bag. The sparkling Louboutins of the time. The Rolex.
This is what broke my parents. That’s what made them calm me down to talk. I remember what my mother said: βSerge, you knowβ¦ it might not be forever. You can’t spend money like that. You have to keep your feet on the ground because everyone falls at some point.
A few weeks after that conversation, everything fell apart. I injured my knee and couldn’t do anything for about 8 months. Time was simply frozen. When I finally returned to the field, I couldn’t join the group. All of a sudden I was on loan to West Brom.
It was as if my mother had seen the future.β
