Green bay Packers make five roster moves before facing Bears in season finale
Musgrave is returning from a six-game absence that was caused by a significant kidney injury suffered on Nov. 19 against the Los Angeles Chargers. It’s unclear what kind of role Musgrave will have in his first game action since the injury, but his combination of speed and size should provide a boost to the passing game and open up some playcalling options for Matt LaFleur. Expect to still see plenty of Tucker Kraft, the ascending rookie who thrived once Musgrave went out. If nothing else, Musgrave’s activation provides another wrinkle for the Bears to think about come Sunday. The second-round pick has 33 catches for 341 yards and a touchdown this season.
Activated RB Emanuel Wilson from injured reserve
Wilson is back on the 53-man roster to provide much-needed depth at running back. A.J. Dillon (stinger) was ruled out Friday, leaving Wilson and Patrick Taylor to handle the backup jobs behind Aaron Jones. It’s possible Wilson (at 5-11, 226) could be the early-down run option behind Jones, while Taylor handles obvious passing situations. The Packers need Jones to play most of the snaps and be a playmaker on Sunday, but Wilson, who rushed 14 times for 86 yards in seven games this season, should get a few opportunities in his first game back from a shoulder injury.
Placed S Rudy Ford on injured reserve
A hamstring injury suffered during last week’s win in Minnesota kept Ford out of practice all week and now lands him on injured reserve, which will all but end his 2023 season. He must miss at least the next four games, meaning he couldn’t return and play unless the Packers make the Super Bowl. The Packers will roll with Darnell Savage and Jonathan Owens as starters at safety, with Anthony Johnson Jr., Zayne Anderson, and Benny Sapp III as backups. Ford started a career-high nine games in 2023.
Elevated WR Grant DuBose from practice squad
This is the first elevation for DuBose, a seventh-round pick in 2023. The Packers signed Bo Melton to the 53-man roster this week and appear to be getting healthy at receiver, but Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks are all listed as questionable to play Sunday, and all three have missed games and been knocked out of games recently. Having DuBose on the gameday roster provides another layer of protection at a key position. It’s also possible one of Watson, Reed, or Wicks is in danger of being inactive on Sunday.
Released CB David Long from 53-man roster
Claimed off waivers by the Packers on Dec. 4, Long ended up playing 14 special teams snaps over three games with Green Bay. Although the Packers recently lost Eric Stokes to injured reserve, the return of Jaire Alexander from suspension and the improving health of Robert Rochell likely made Long expendable. Roster spots needed to be created for Luke Musgrave and Emanuel Wilson, and the Packers still have five healthy cornerbacks minus Long.
