Throughout his stint with the Kansas City Chiefs, Andy Reid has left a legacy of coaching excellence. The offensive coordinator for the New York Giants, Mike Kafka, is one of his most recent notable ex-coaches from Kansas City. The former NFL quarterback is hoping to advance in his career after spending two years in New York City.
The Tennessee Titans made the announcement on Friday that Kafka had been interviewed for the position of head coach. Since in-person interviews are prohibited by NFL regulations until January 22, the interview was conducted virtually.
The NFL is once again showing interest in hiring Mike Kafka as head coach.
Under Giants head coach Brian Daboll, Kafka has served as offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. Under Kafka’s direction, New York’s offensive assault has been, to put it mildly, pitiful. The squad has a -147 point difference and has finished 30th in yards per play and 27th in points scored since 2022. However, Kafka’s time in New York has not been good for him due to injuries and underwhelming players.
Kafk’s on-field performance begs the question of why he would make a good head coach. Although Kafka may be a viable contender given his playing background and league contacts, I would be upset if my favorite team selected him to be their head coach.
In 2017, Kafka started his NFL coaching career as an offensive quality control coach with the Chiefs. He rose to quarterbacks coach in 2018, the same season Patrick Mahomes earned his first MVP and Pro Bowl selection. Prior to the 2020 campaign, Kafka was awarded another title—that of passing game coordinator. The franchise made four consecutive appearances in the AFC Championship game and won one Super Bowl while Kafka was in Kansas City.
The Nashville-based franchise is without a head coach after the team surprisingly sacked Mike Vrabel last week. Following joining the Titans in 2018, the former linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs led them to four straight winning seasons; however, he was probably fired following two consecutive seasons below.500. Alongside Bill Belichick, the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year is one of the league’s most sought-after coaching prospects, so he’ll probably find work soon.
Considering Kafka’s successful coaching career with the Chiefs, his experience working closely with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and his contributions to the team’s Super Bowl victory, it would be intriguing to see how he could potentially bring his expertise and winning mentality to the Titans.
