Threat prompts police presence; hold and secure at 2 Clearwater schools
Following a report of a potential threat to the district, two Clearwater schools will be placed on hold and placed in a secure environment for the entire Monday, January 29, with an increased police presence.
Dr. Rhonda Nixon, superintendent of School District 73, sent a letter on Sunday night, January 28, informing parents and guardians of the circumstances at Raft River Elementary and Clearwater Secondary.
I am informing you of a concern, as mentioned by Nixon, based on police suggestions and consultation. A suspected threat to Raft River Elementary School was the subject of an anonymous report to the district principal of safe and caring schools.
Given the concerning nature of this material, authorities were notified, and a police file was established.
Nixon noted that she keeps in frequent communication with provincial specialists on student safety through the district principal of safe and caring schools.
As we take every care to guarantee the safety and well-being of all students and staff at Raft River Elementary School and Clearwater Secondary School, she and I have received invaluable guidance. Rest assured that we place the utmost priority on the safety of our personnel and students.
Nixon wrote a letter to the parents stating that because the threats are part of a police file, she was unable to provide more details.
It is a regular school day during a hold-and-secure scenario, with the exception that all outdoor activities are shifted inside. The principal also makes sure that no staff members or pupils leave the facility and that all doors are closed and staff-monitored to keep out unwanted visitors.
