After winning Super Bowl XLIII, former Steelers owner Dan Rooney joined quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and head coach Mike Tomlin.
According to Kurt Benkert’s hypothetical scenario, the Steelers move on from Tomlin.
The Steelers have no justification for firing Tomlin or parting ways with him. But because of Tomlin’s unwavering mediocrity and his inexplicable devotion to offensive coordinator Matt Canada, supporters have grown weary of him. In his news conferences following games, Tomlin has also been assigning incorrect responsibility, which has Steelers supporters considering quitting. Kurt Benkert, a former NFL quarterback who is now well-known in the media, tweeted a speculative scenario in which the Steelers fire head coach Mike Tomlin and select a new coach for the 2024 campaign.
Benkert’s wild theory calls for Jim Harbaugh, one of the top college football head coaches in the last ten years, to be hired by the Steelers and Tomlin to be dealt to the Las Vegas Raiders as their new head coach. Though implausible and incredibly unlikely, this possibility is nonetheless thought-provoking.
Tomlin’s trade to the Raiders was motivated by the belief that he would blend in with their culture and that they, like the Steelers, have a rich past highlighted by iconic players. Josh McDaniels, the Raiders’ head coach, as well as their offensive coordinator and general manager, were just fired. As long as the organization decides not to retain Antonio Pierce as their interim head coach going forward, the head coach position in Las Vegas is presumed to be vacant.
In the 2022 offseason, Sean Payton agreed to join the Kurt Benkert team as their new head coach, marking the most recent head coach exchange. To get out of his previous deal with the New Orleans Saints, the Broncos had to send them a first- and a second-round selection. This is the kind of ridiculous stuff the Steelers would probably receive.
The most absurd aspect of this hypothetical scenario isn’t that the Steelers are replacing Tomlin, who is embroiled in a cheating controversy in Michigan, but rather that Harbaugh is being brought in to take his place. There have been rumors circulating for the past few weeks regarding a member of Harbaugh’s staff who is sending people to other teams’ games in order to grab signs off their sidelines. After they reported back, Michigan would take advantage of these signals. According to accounts, Michigan’s success has increased significantly in the past few years, primarily as a result of this kind of deception. a
There are persistent suspicions that Harbaugh is taking a new NFL job every offseason, despite the fact that he has experience as an NFL head coach. From 2011 to 2014, he was the San Francisco 49ers’ coach. In 2012, he led the team to the Super Bowl. His brother, John Harbaugh, was the coach of the Baltimore Ravens, who ultimately defeated them in the Super Bowl. It was the first Super Bowl where brothers coached different teams. Having the two Harbaugh brothers coach in the AFC North and on opposing teams in the NFL’s fiercest rivalry—the Steelers and Ravens—would be an additional alluring aspect of this scenario.
It goes without saying that none of the events in this scenario could possibly occur because they are all incredibly unlikely. Tomlin would never be traded by the Steelers to a different AFC team, especially as head coach. Furthermore, the Steelers would never consider hiring a candidate in a cheating scandal if they were in the process of filling a head coaching opening.
