Duke DT DeWayne Carter, who impressed during team practices this week, is one defensive player the Dallas Cowboys may be eyeing for this year’s Senior Bowl.
Even though they were eliminated from the playoffs early in 2023, the Dallas Cowboys are still in a strong position to be one of the few and fiercest teams competing for the NFC title in 2024.
The Cowboys seem pleased to add senior players to their roster who can back up their “all-in” quest for glory, preferring to focus on the here and now rather than the far-off future. Dallas is therefore probably looking to the NFL Draft to help them prepare for the future.
This year at the Senior Bowl, there were about 130 prospects demonstrating their skills. The Cowboys have been diligent in their scouting of possible draft picks. To be honest, Dallas’ contingent would surely love to identify at least one player who could help them fill a roster spot right now in addition to being a wise investment for the future.
Thus, in the week preceding the April Draft, the Cowboys might want to keep an eye on Duke defensive tackle DeWayne Carter.
Carter projects as a 3-tech defensive tackle and is well-known for his ability to stop the run. He recorded 11 sacks and 87 tackles in his four years with the Blue Devils, 21.5 of which were for a loss. Carter is a physically strong athlete who can hold a double team because of his stature (6-3, 355). He totaled 548 snaps in 12 games for the Blue Devils in 2023 as a fifth-year senior. Carter racked up 15 stops, 10 assists, and 19 tackles. He finished the season with 22 total pressures as a pass rusher, including 3 quarterback hits, 2 sacks, and 17 quarterback hurries.
The Cowboys are rumored to be in dire need of linebacker help, but it would be wiser to bolster their interior defensive line with skill. The Cowboys were ranked No. 16 when it came to run defense, even though they finished the season with the best overall and pass defensive rankings. Carter is still a work in progress when it comes to pass defense, but if chosen, he might see action for the Cowboys as a reserve run defender.

The ACC product won all of his one-on-one contests during the practice week, including a Thursday morning bull rush that knocked an opponent’s offensive tackle off his feet. In addition to being a natural run stopper, a player with Carter’s height and instincts would make it easier for linebackers and edge rushers to pressure opposing passers.
DeWayne Carter’s established comfort in blue and white would benefit from a little Dallas silver added to it in order to launch a successful professional career.
