With about four minutes left in the first quarter, Dameon Pierce’s three-yard touchdown run put Houston ahead 10-0. Dell was hurt on the play.
Dell had been on a roll, going four games in a row with at least eight targets, fifty yards, and a touchdown, but this tragic accident ended his run.
Following the injury in December, Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik remarked, “That one hurts a lot.” It’s unrelated to football; I say this as a player. He’s a truly unique child as a person, and it’s been a pleasure to have him around. Having him even partially participate in our activities this year has been a pleasure.
Dell’s first season numbers demonstrated his promise despite the setback.
With a game average of 4.3 catches for 54.5 yards and 0.64 touchdowns, Dell established himself as one of the Texans offense’s real stars. especially in light of the fact that those stats were attained in spite of missing two games at the beginning of the season due to injuries.
When injury-affected games were taken out of the equation, Dell’s numbers were even more impressive: on 8.5 targets a game, he averaged 5.1 catches for 77.3 yards and 0.88 touchdowns.
Looking ahead, C.J. Stroud appears to be setting up the Houston offense for success, as he finds ways to find Dell and Nico Collins, another breakout prospect for 2023, with passes.
