On a griddy penalty shot by Jake Walman, the Red Wings defeated the Canucks 4-3 in overtime.
The Detroit Red Wings took the Vancouver Canucks to a commanding lead in their first game following the all-star break and required bye week. In the opening quarter, Lucas Raymond scored a spectacular goal barely 45 seconds in. With this goal, Raymond has now scored 13 goals in the 2023–24 NHL season and has seven points from his previous five games. This puts you in second place on the Red Wings’ roster, after Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Larkin.
The Canucks appeared to take notice of Raymond, the native of Gothenburg, Sweden, and he was struck by Nikita Zadorov, who stands six feet, six inches higher than Raymond.. It would be Raymond who would rejoin the game in the second half. The left-winger needs to put on weight if he wants to stay in the NHL at his stature. If he can’t develop the footwork that allowed him to score what some are speculating could be a “goal of the year” contender, he will have to bulk up.
After the all-star break, the Canucks had already played two games, which allowed them to get over their game’s “rust.” Before the game against the Red Wings, the club had a 34-11-6 record, which tied them with the Boston Bruins for the best record in the NHL. However, they were able to recover by scoring three goals in a row. Maybe the Red Wings’ struggles in the second period stemmed from the fact that this was their first game. This bad play was demonstrated by Vancouver’s ability to score right away following Detroit’s seven consecutive minutes of power play..
The Canucks took a 3-1 lead in the second period thanks to goals and two assists from former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Filip Hronek. With a total of 178 goals against, the fourth most in the NHL this season, the Red Wings club has had difficulty competing in the second period. As they have done numerous times this season, the Red Wings came back in the third period.
The Red Wings tied the Canucks with goals in the third period from Daniel Sprong and Michael Rasmussen. Throughout his first year and a half leading the squad, head coach Derek Lalonde has ingrained this in the Red Wings. Lalonde preached that victory will come via a process during his inaugural press conference. The Red Wings appear to have heeded this advice, as they are presently vying for their first postseason berth in seven seasons.
The game-winning goal was scored by Jake Walman, who also struck his signature celly.. This time, it was a penalty shot in overtime that gave the team a 4-3 victory. Griddy scored both goals against Casey DeSmith, the goalie. Walman took the field for the first time against the Montreal Canadiens. Seeing this, the Red Wings marketing staff distributed griddy bobbleheads signed by Jake Walman. It will be interesting to observe how the squad responds to this second goal that causes congestion.
