Cowboys “Secret”: After McCarthy is fired, Mike Zimmer will become head coach?
Las Vegas Mike Zimmer hasn’t even moved one box of belongings into the defensive coordinator’s office at The Star in Frisco as of this writing. Yet despite the fact that Zimmer’s seat is still warm from Dan Quinn’s tenure there, one prediction already indicates he won’t be there for very long.
The headline states, “Mike Zimmer already has the inside track to become the next head coach of the Cowboys.””
Hold on. How come? Does he?
Here in Las Vegas, it’s Super Bowl Sunday, and rumors are already circulating outside The Star that Belichick will be the Cowboys’ coach in 2025. ESPN’s latest bizarre defense of the egregiously early “report”?
“The Cowboys are a storied franchise, and Bill Belichick is a history buff.” Really? That’s the way they think.
And now, rumors are starting to circulate that Zimmer has more ulterior motives than merely becoming head coach Mike McCarthy’s top defensive assistant.
Here to replace McCarthy is Zimmer.
The scolding statement “the hyperbole is flowing” is made by USAToday, who then goes on to suggest that “maybe head coach isn’t such a distant thought” for Zimmer. Zimmer, 67, may believe that leading the defense in 2024 will give him an advantage over McCarthy when it comes to the head coaching position in 2025.
But there isn’t any proof of this. After all, McCarthy’s coordinator for four years—Dan Quinn, who is off to Washington—was managed without a scrap of strife motivated by ambition.
That says something about Quinn’s personality. Furthermore, given that we have known Zimmer for nearly 30 years, we think we can attribute the same level of character to him.As we immediately wrote upon learning that he was visiting the area…
“How is contractual dreary? McCarthy is aware that his newly appointed chief of staff will not aim to succeed him throughout the year. McCarthy was able to gain Quinn’s trust. Zimmer, who has no illusions about this, is probably about to find it again. He left the NFL in 2021, and he isn’t returning for the glamour. He is returning to resume his grind.
“Zimmer is an artificial guy. He is a devoted man. His goal is to assist.
Our understanding of the motivations behind McCarthy, Quinn, and now Zimmer leads to that.
USAToday responds by implying that there’s a “secret” being concealed here.
The article states, “It would be difficult watching (the Cowboys) pass the keys over to Zimmer in 2025, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t dangle the carrot in their sales pitch. For obvious reasons, Zimmer isn’t going to let on that he’s eyeballing McCarthy’s job.”
Since we are unaware of that “eyeballing” or that “carrot,” we are unable to write it in good faith. We believe Zimmer’s purpose in coming here as the defensive coordinator is to “shock the system.” We shall therefore write that.
