After the 2023 season, we can safely declare five Buccaneers to be busts.
5. Quarterback Kyle Trask
Recall last summer when we were informed that Kyle Trask and Baker Mayfield would engage in genuine competition. These two could square off at training camp to determine who ultimately gets the starting position.
- It’s safe to say, in my opinion, that Trask is not even close to Mayfield’s stratosphere. Imagine for a moment if Trask had been hired by the Bucs. What effect may that have had on the entire season? How many more losses would the Bucs suffer before Todd Bowles gave Mayfield the reins?
Even though Trask only tried one pass during the season, it seems strange to call him a bust, but at this point in his career, I believe that label fits. Of course, there’s always time to give his career another go. But Trask, a former second-round pick, has accomplished almost nothing in three seasons.
In a contest, he was never going to defeat Tom Brady. It was always inevitable. Even if Trask were a free agent, he wouldn’t be talented enough to be considered in a league and offseason where multiple clubs may be fighting for a quarterback.
Trask opening the season could have been a complete train wreck, so it’s a good thing the Bucs went with Mayfield last year.
