Alabama was hopeful that its performance in Friday night’s game at the Hoover Met would improve its record and help the club get selected to host a regional during the NCAA Tournament the following week. But before receiving their own opportunity at bat, the Crimson Tide fell behind by five runs, making for a difficult start to the evening.
In front of a fervently pro-Alabama crowd on Friday, No. 8 Vanderbilt defeated No. 24 Alabama, 9-2, to eliminate the Crimson Tide from the SEC Tournament. On their path to victory, the Commodores scored five runs in the opening inning and never let up a lead of less than three. Vanderbilt advances to the tournament’s semifinals, where it will play Florida, the top-seeded team.
Alabama (40-19) did not have the start from Jacob McNairy that they had hoped for. McNairy had only given up one run or less in seven of his previous eight games going into Friday night’s contest, but the Commodores arrived with the proper scouting report and swiftly put points on the board. In 4 1/3 innings on the mound, McNairy allowed a season-high eight runs to be scored. He gave up four walks, gave up nine hits, and struck out six.
