Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic declared his retirement
Beginning with the first game of the season, Rajakovic and his spouse Gaga promised to donate $20 for each assist the Raptors recorded. He declared on Wednesday that the proceeds will be divided among three children’s hospitals: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee; Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children; and a children’s hospital in
Rajakovic stated following practice at the OVO Athletic Centre, “Assists are something that is crucial on the court but also off the court.” It is our civic duty to assist people in need when we are able to do so.
“We only want to offer a small contribution on our end.”
That might be going too far.
Toronto leads the NBA in assists this season with an average of 29.6 per game. The Raptors have been leading the NBA in assists per game for 27 games running, which is the fourth longest stretch in league history for a single season and the longest active streak in the league.
Thus far this campaign, they have played 44 games and totaled 1,302 assists.
Rajakovic stated that he had planned to provide this donation from the beginning of the season, but he postponed making the announcement because the Raptors were scheduled to visit Variety Village and Sick Kids’ Hospital on Wednesday following practice.
He stated that it’s “very vital” for his players to realize how lucky they are to be well and be able to support themselves through basketball.
“Thank God we have good resources and are in a good position to employ them. We are privileged to be in this situation that we are in as part of the NBA,” Rajakovic remarked. Giving back to the community, helping the less fortunate, and lending a hand both on and off the court is our civic duty.

When Rajakovic was an assistant coach for the Grizzlies, he claimed, he and his wife made their first trip to St. Jude in Memphis. Later, before the Raptors defeated the Grizzlies 116-111 in Memphis, he brought the team to the hospital once more.

Recalling his most recent visit to St. Jude’s, Rajakovic stated, “When you’re sick, all you want is to get well. It’s a wonderful cause and so motivating to watch those families and children fighting so valiantly and having all the support professionals there for them every day.
