Unexpected information on Buccanneers’s starting quarterback Baker Mayfield situation surfaces.
The Ohio State Buckeyes, who added former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard to their excellent transfer class, are predicted to be among the best teams in the nation this season. Howard’s record of starting every game at quarterback, though, might not be as reliable as some might think.
In the quarterback room in the program, Howard possesses the greatest amount of experience by far. However, Jesse Simonton, a national columnist for On3, claims that Howard might not be a “guarantee” to start for the squad all season.
The strange thing, in my opinion, with Will Howard is that he kind of peaks at his early Heisman odds—he’s well up there. He has made several great contributions to Kansas State. Just two years ago, he guided them to a victory over TCU and a Big 12 Championship game. The interesting thing is, Andy, I think you could definitely make the case that he might not even be Ohio State’s starting quarterback at the end of the season.
That quarterback room is quite luxurious. Then you introduce Julian Sayin. Air Noland has another five-star hotel for you. Devin Brown and [Lincoln] Kienholz are still with you. All those guys probably won’t be around after spring. He might therefore be a new face in a new setting where he’s possibly giving the ball or his starting hand to someone else if he doesn’t finish it.
Howard has passed for 5,786 yards, 48 passing touchdowns, and 25 interceptions in his time at Kansas State. While these are impressive numbers, they do not justify him as the clear first choice until he proves himself.
Given his experience advantage, it’s likely that Howard will receive the first opportunity to start when they play Akron in their season opener. However, if the output doesn’t pick up, he might end up sitting on the bench soon.
