Antoine Winfield Jr. was just tied to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the foreseeable future by way of a franchise tag. The Philadelphia Eagles were thought to be the best option for safety, though, prior to that.
With an outstanding 11-6 record at the end of the previous season, the Eagles finished second in the NFC East division. Despite losing to the Dallas Cowboys for the top spot, the team was still able to secure a postseason berth.
Regretfully, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers completely demolished the Eagles with a score of 32-9 in the wild card round. Soon after Philadelphia was eliminated, the front administration fired offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and defensive coordinator Sean Desai due to this dramatic collapse.
In the meantime, Winfield, who performed well for Tampa Bay the previous season, was expected to earn $92 million in his next contract. It is unclear how the franchise tag will turn out in terms of safety and whether Winfield will receive a longer contract as a result.
Antoine Winfield Jr. is thought to fit best with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Philadelphia was thought to be the ideal landing place for Winfield prior to his imprisonment by the Buccaneers. Further details were provided by Kristopher Knox in his Bleacher Report article:
But the Eagles might potentially offer the first-team All-Pro a fantastic landing spot. Philadelphia requires backup in the secondary and a defender capable of turning games around. The Eagles are a club that wants to win the Super Bowl, and they do have the kind of defensive line that may allow Winfield to move around the secondary and create opportunities, according to Knox.
By the following season, Philadelphia’s 30th-place defense might have improved if Winfield had joined them. Additionally, there may have been a greater opportunity for the Eagles to advance far in the playoffs.
But Philadelphia loses that opportunity because of Winfield’s franchise tag from the Buccaneers. Whatever the situation, it will be interesting to watch how the safety’s career and upcoming contracts develop in Tampa Bay.
