DEPARTURE OR STAY: The Detroit Lions make a final decision on 3 standout players.
The Detroit Lions decide on Anthony Pittman, Benito Jones, and Brock Wright.
Cheers to an NFL New Year! The 2024 NFL New Year officially began at 4 p.m. ET just moments ago, meaning teams may now start signing free agents. The sole player from the Detroit Lions to get a tender is TE Brock Wright, who received a “right of first refusal” offer. Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network provided a list of the seven restricted free agents throughout the league shortly after the new year began.
What this implies for Anthony Pittman, Benito Jones, and other people
Since Wright is the only Lions player who was tendered, Anthony Pittman and Benito Jones were not, making them unrestricted free agents. Halil Dorsey, Chase Lucas, Jerry Jacobs, and Scott Daly are the other players that did not receive a tender (thanks to @Justin_Rogers).
It’s also crucial to remember that it’s possible that the Lions and one or more of the aforementioned players have reached an agreement on a contract, that hasn’t been formally declared. (Thank you, @ErikSchlitt.)
The Verdict: A Change in the Lions’ Roster
The Detroit Lions’ roster strategy underwent a major change with the tender of Brock Wright and the allowance of Benito Jones, Anthony Pittman, and other players to become unrestricted free agents. This move can be a sign that the Lions want to restructure their roster for the next season and look at new talent.
