Makhehlene Makhaula, an Orlando Pirates midfielder, is anticipated to return to training this week following an on-field incident.
The midfield player was taken to the hospital after collapsing during Saturday’s Nedbank Cup Round of 16 match against the Hungry Lions.
A follow-up on the player’s recuperation was provided by Pirates coach Jose Riveiro during a Monday media conference at the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal draw at SuperSport studios in Randburg.
“He is well; it was a frightening and challenging time, but ultimately, it was not as awful as it appeared at first,” Riveiro remarked.
“Hopefully, he can resume regular work with the club this week after his next evaluation with the physicians on Tuesday.”
The Pirates faced AmaZulu FC, a fellow DStv Premiership team, in the round of eight after facing teams from lesser levels in the earlier stages.
Riveiro is encouraged by the overwhelming support the squad often receives while visiting the seaside city, even if he anticipates a difficult matchup with Usuthu in Durban.
“There isn’t an easy opponent at this point in the competition. This season, we have already faced AmaZulu in Durban, and the result was a score of 0-0,” Riveiro stated.
Playing well against AmaZulu is challenging since they are a well-organized squad. As you can see from their games, AmaZulu is having trouble against anyone, and it is mostly due to their own efforts.
“We are going to get ready for what is coming, but we already know it.” For us, visiting Durban is wonderful, as it always feels like home.
“I’m sure a lot of (Durban-based) Pirates supporters are pleased with the draw and are prepared to go in large numbers to set the right mood for a knockout match.”
On Saturday, March 30, the Pirates will play their league opener at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane against Sekhukhune United.
