The Buffalo Bills have been compelled to address their defensive line early in free agency due to significant departures. Following Ed Oliver, the team witnessed the departure of the next four top snap-getters on the interior. To address this void and add depth and starting experience, they have secured the services of former Chargers defensive tackle Austin Johnson, as reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Johnson’s contract is a one-year deal valued at $3.5 million, with the potential to earn up to $4 million.
With eight years of NFL experience, Johnson previously played for the Titans and Giants before joining the Chargers. Drafted by the Titans in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft from Penn State, Johnson initially served as a rotational player before gradually earning more starting opportunities alongside players like Jurrell Casey and DaQuan Jones. Upon joining the Giants, he assumed full-time starting duties following the departure of Dalvin Tomlinson, although his performance, according to Pro Football Focus, declined significantly in 2023, marking his worst season to date.
Despite Johnson’s recent struggles, the Bills are optimistic about his potential contribution, especially as he reunites with DaQuan Jones on the defensive line. However, Buffalo still faces the task of further bolstering their defensive line, with notable departures and lingering free agents like Jordan Phillips and Linval Joseph. While returning veterans or late-round rookies are potential options to enhance depth, the Bills remain proactive in shoring up their defensive front for the upcoming season.
