The winner of the match between in-form Australian Jordan Thompson and surging French veteran Gael Monfils will next face Alcaraz.
On his 31st birthday, Alcaraz showed no compassion as he seized the initiative right away, winning the first set 10 to 1. In addition, he made 10 net raids against his opponent, who dug down behind the baseline. In the end, the defending Wimbledon champion had 22 wins to 16 unintentional errors (against 9–21 for his opponent).
According to Infosys ATP Stats, Alcaraz performed well under duress as well, converting four of his eight opportunities and saving all three break points he faced.
The Spaniard, who won his maiden Masters 1000 title in Miami, exudes confidence. Alcaraz is currently 11-2 in the competition.
