John Lynch general manager of San Francisco 49ers recently declared that he would shortly be retiring

Due to a payroll miscalculation this offseason, the San Francisco 49ers were penalized a 2025 fifth-round pick by the NFL and had their 2024 fourth-round pick moved back four spots.

According to general manager John Lynch, the team unintentionally overpaid a player, which is why the sanction was applied.

He informed reporters, “We overpaid a player… by $75,000.” This occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, when a new system was implemented. Thus, it took place. Each of us is responsible for our share. To address some of the problems that arose, we went through a comprehensive mitigation process. However, the league made the decision to enforce it, so you accept your medicine and go on.”

Lynch stated, “The guy did what you’d assume he’d do,” implying that the player did not return the funds when the organization learned the mistake and made an effort to recover the overpayment.

He continued by saying that the 49ers were not overpaying due to the error and that he had a “difference of view on the severity” of the fine imposed by Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner.
