Blockbuster Deal: Bengals Star Wanting Trade Sets Market for $22 Million
The NFL trade market for top-tier wide receivers has been established, leaving the Cincinnati Bengals with a decision to make: trade or retain their assets.
On April 3, the Buffalo Bills traded NFL All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs, along with a 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick, to the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick. This trade sets a precedent for the value of elite receivers in the league.
Meanwhile, the Bengals have placed the franchise tag on Tee Higgins for the 2024 season, which carries a hefty price tag of approximately $22 million. Despite this, Higgins sought a long-term deal with the team and expressed a desire for a trade.
Considering the value assigned to Diggs in the trade market, the Bengals likely view Higgins as worth no less than a first-round pick. At just 25 years old, Higgins has already amassed two 1,000-yard seasons, making him one of the league’s top young wideouts.
Injuries hampered Higgins’ performance in 2023, leading to career lows in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. However, his standout season in 2021, which included a stellar playoff performance culminating in Super Bowl LVI, showcased his immense talent and potential.
The Bengals now face the challenge of managing their roster, especially with the emergence of Ja’Marr Chase alongside Higgins. Chase’s aspirations for a lucrative contract add to the team’s financial considerations, compounded by Joe Burrow’s record-breaking deal signed before the 2023 season.
Despite trade requests, the Bengals have thus far refused to part ways with Higgins, believing he remains integral to their Super Bowl aspirations in the upcoming season. As they navigate the complexities of roster management and salary cap constraints, retaining Higgins appears to be a priority for Cincinnati’s front office and coaching staff.
