Breaking News: Wide receiver Tom Kennedy of the Detroit Lions resigned because of…
Tom Kennedy, a seasoned receiver, has re-signed with the Detroit Lions, the organization announced on Wednesday. The Lions dismissed rookie receiver Dylan Drummond to clear space on the roster.
Over the past four seasons, Kennedy has alternated between the team’s 53-man roster and practice squad. He was expected to try again for a spot on the final roster this season, but during training camp, he had a major upper-body injury that put him on injured reserve at first. He was released following the team and himself coming to an injury settlement. He’s back in Detroit now.
Kennedy has appeared in 20 games for the Lions since first joining the team in 2019. He has hauled in 14 catches for 195 yards and nine first downs throughout that time. In 2021, he also completed a stunning trick play with a 75-yard touchdown pass to Kalif Raymond.
Kennedy is unlikely to play anytime soon on the 53-man roster. Donovan Peoples-Jones was just acquired by the Lions, who already have a productive receiving group that includes Josh Reynolds, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Raymond, and rookie Antoine Green. Nevertheless, this coaching staff has faith in Kennedy, and he might be a useful depth player should the Lions suffer any injuries at the position.
Coach Dan Campbell once observed, “You never know when your number’s going to be called,” in December 2022. “Kennedy attends the game for a variety of reasons, including his ability to perform certain tasks both physically and mentally in numerous roles.”
