Former Auburn tight end signs with the Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles tight end A one-year contract was inked by C.J. Uzomah, a former Auburn player, the NFL team announced on Thursday.
On March 13, the New York Jets released Uzomah due to a failed physical designation with one game left on his three-year, $24 million contract.
Uzomah ended the 2023 season on injured reserve following a medial collateral ligament injury he sustained during a 13-8 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on December 3. The final five games of the season he did not attend.
In 2023, Uzomah had eight receptions for 58 yards and one touchdown in 12 games, including eight starts. He participated in 148 special teams plays and 239 offensive snaps during that period.
Uzomah is one of the six tight ends that Philadelphia currently has on the roster.
Dallas Goedert, the starting quarterback, caught 59 passes for 592 yards and three scores in 14 games the previous season. Grant Calcaterra has nine receptions for 120 yards in his two seasons with the Eagles. None of the other tight ends—Nathan Togiai, Albert Okwuegbunam, and E.J. Jenkins—had an NFL reception in 2023.
Uzomah was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL Draft, after being selected by Auburn.
Through 114 receptions, Uzomah scored eight touchdowns and gained 1,098 yards throughout his first six seasons with the Bengals.
In 2021, when Cincinnati won the AFC title, Uzomah had 49 receptions for 493 yards and five touchdowns, but the team lost Super Bowl LVI to the Los Angeles Rams 23-20. Due to a ruptured Achilles tendon, Uzomah had missed all but two games of the 2020 campaign.
The Jets signed Uzomah in free agency after the 2021 season. In his first season with New York, Uzomah has 21 receptions for 232 yards and two touchdowns.
