Bills GM Brandon Beane details his decision to trade…
On Wednesday, the Buffalo Bills dealt wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Texans in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick.
In an interview with the media, Bills general manager Brandon Beane discussed the deal, how it will benefit Buffalo, and the team’s future plans.
How the agreement came about and Buffalo’s rationale behind it.
Beane revealed that talks with the Texans heated up this week and that Buffalo would benefit from the value Houston was providing in exchange for a 2025 second-round pick.
“The last couple days, the value seemed to make sense, and the timing made sense for them and for us,” Beane stated. “And we worked on the deal and got it finalized today.”
Beane claimed to have discussed the advantages and disadvantages of a transaction with people “at the highest levels of our organization” multiple times during that process. Beane considered the Bills’ future when Buffalo and Houston worked out the details of the deal.
“Anytime you make a move like this, as I said, very difficult, you’re trying to win,” he stated. And sometimes, others could fail to notice that. The Bills are not giving up, making a retreat, or anything of the sort with this. Our goal in all we do is to succeed.”
“It was made in what we felt was the best interest of the Bills,” he continued. We may continue in this manner; I can’t think of a better way to put it.”
Beane revealed at his news conference that he did alert quarterback Josh Allen to teams’ interest in Diggs’ availability earlier in the offseason.
“I did alert (Josh) that there had been some inquiries and it wasn’t 100% off the table,” said Beane.
Since the transaction was completed, the two had not spoken, but Beane promised they would talk soon.
“Josh and I have a pretty regular conversation on things, and I think it’s important for me to make sure if I think something could happen to make sure he’s not blindsided,” he stated.
Beane also explained the implications of the move for Buffalo’s salary cap moving ahead.
Before this action, we were on the cap for about seven and a half million people. This will deduct three (point) three (millions). There will be a slight offset, and by the time a player is added back on, whenever that happens, it might be closer to four. Consequently, it draws us into the three corners of the cap area. We don’t have a lot of room, so we’ll still need to set aside cash for things like practice squad, replacement prices, draft picks, and other things. We’ll be inventive, though. We will continue to search. More cap flexibility is available for the following year, which may benefit you even if you do nothing in 2025, according to Beane.
The general manager of Buffalo also mentioned that Tre’Davious White’s June 1 releases will save the team money in the future.
Diggs’ donation to Buffalo
Before discussing the specifics of the deal, Beane gave Diggs credit for his enormous contribution to Buffalo’s success between 2020 and 2023.
“I want to thank Stef for four really good seasons,” remarked Beane. “We are grateful for all that he contributed to the squad when we traded for him during the COVID season. He played a significant role in our four division victories. These transitions are never simple. incredibly difficult. Not created in a day or anything similar.”
