Get to know the Bucs’ 26th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft…
Nashville Native
Nashville suburb Brentwood is where Graham Barton was raised. Barton played lacrosse in the past, but in high school, he preferred football. As a four-year letterman, he played on both the offensive and defensive lines. In his senior year, he helped lead Ravenwood High School to a 13-2 record and the 2019 6A state championship game. Barton’s contributions on the gridiron earned him All-State recognition as a senior.
Public Policy Major
In the summer of 2023, Barton, a Duke student majoring in public policy, worked as an intern in U.S. Senator Thom Tillis’ Raleigh office. An interdisciplinary degree program in public policy prepares teachers to create and evaluate solutions for social issues in an effort to impact local, state, and federal legislation. Barton’s mental toughness away from the field of play impressed the Bucs management.
General manager Jason Licht said of Barton’s intelligence, “That is a very important quality.” “That does not guarantee that you will have a brilliant football mind, but in his case, it does.”
With 2,174 rushing, 2,351 passing, and 26 rushing touchdowns in 2023—tied for the fifth-most in program history—Barton helped the Blue Devils attack. He oversaw an offensive line that finished third in the ACC and tied for 24th place nationally in terms of sacks allowed per game (1.31). Against No. 4 Florida State, he recorded four knockdown blocks, and against No. 9 Clemson, he recorded a team-high five. Barton was selected for the ACC first team and the All-America team in 2023.
Enhancing Versatility
After being named a freshman All-American at center in 2020, Barton spent the next three years of his collegiate career starting at left tackle, where he made 34 starts. Several teams were interested in Barton before the draft because of his versatility across positions, and he spent the summer honing his craft. In recent months, he has concentrated on perfecting his snapping technique to build muscle memory.
Licht described Barton as possessing a fierce playing style, exceptional athleticism, and technical proficiency. Despite being thrown into the center position due to an injury during his freshman year without much preparation, Barton excelled. His versatility and skill set are reminiscent of Ali Marpet and Ryan Jensen, with a personality akin to Tristan Wirfs. Overall, Barton’s attributes make him an exciting prospect for teams.
Toolkit
Barton exhibits remarkable agility off the snap and maintains his intensity until the end of each play. As a forceful blocker in the running game, he excels at redirecting defenders, especially at the second level. Barton’s prowess in pulling plays showcases his exceptional balance and control. His spirited attitude is evident throughout his game tape, particularly when executing drive blocks. He played a significant role in enhancing Duke’s screen game, drawing attention from scouts with his solid technique and natural athleticism. In 2024, Barton is expected to bolster the Buccaneers’ running game with his ability to climb upfield and provide stability to the offensive line by effectively countering pass rush movements.
Licht expressed his satisfaction, noting Barton’s strong foundation, ability to hold his ground, and aggressive mindset, all of which align perfectly with the Buccaneers’ offensive line requirements. Barton embodies the desired traits sought after by the team.
