Mitchell was not seen wearing a uniform for Alabama’s A-Day match on April 13. The Tuesday before, the last opportunity for reporters to see practice before the spring game, he had been spotted in uniform.
Ranking No. 195 nationwide by 247 Sports, Mitchell is a four-star prospect in the 2023 class out of Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.) High School. He played in seven games last season, primarily on special teams. His position in Alabama’s new defense remained unclear, and throughout workouts this spring, reporters saw him not practicing with the second-team safety group.
Not long after enrolling early at Alabama the previous year, Mitchell was busted for marijuana possession by Florida police in March 2023 following a traffic stop during which he drove over 140 mph to avoid detection. Soon after the incident, Mitchell was suspended by head coach Nick Saban. Mitchell entered a not guilty plea to his legal charge, which resulted in community service and probation. Saban brought Mitchell back in the summer of last year.
Mitchell leaves Alabama’s scholarship transfer portal as the fourth person to do so this spring. Undergraduate and graduate athletes’ transfer portals end on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Mitchell’s entry into the portal occurs one day after safety Kendall Howard of Charlotte committed to Alabama via the transfer portal; hours later, safety Peyton Woodyard made his first entry into the portal.
