Patrick Mahomes explains why he wants to leave Kansas City for Green Bay Packers.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ top quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, has shown his love and admiration for the city’s residents amid speculation that the team would explore moving from Missouri to Kansas. The Chiefs have been playing at Arrowhead Stadium since 1972, but their lease is scheduled to expire in 2030. Although the team underwent significant renovations from 2007 to 2010, they are eager for more upgrades.
However, financing these renovations—which are expected to cost $800 million—has turned into a divisive topic.
Since selecting Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Chiefs have had a meteoric rise in popularity, winning three Super Bowl titles in the previous seven years and garnering sellout crowds. The Chiefs are keen to modernize its amenities in order to compete with competing stadiums.
The club is now considering other possibilities after 2030 because voters in Jackson County, where Arrowhead is located, recently rejected a sales tax package that would have partially funded the improvements. Mahomes has made it obvious that he thinks the fans should come first, despite Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt’s suggestion that a move to Kansas would be a possibility. His affection for the people of Kansas City and his sentimental bond with Arrowhead Stadium imply that he might not be in favor of the proposed move.
