Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has made it clear that he’s comfortable coaching the team on his expiring contract, with no urgency to negotiate a new deal. Kerr, who’s in the final year of a two-year, $35 million contract extension, expressed his confidence in the team’s management and ownership, stating, “I’m so aligned with Mike Dunleavy and Joe Lacob. There’s no reason for discussion or concern”.
Kerr’s decision comes as a surprise, given the Warriors’ current struggles and the recent massive contract extension given to Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, worth $120 million over eight years. With Kerr’s impressive track record, including four NBA championships and a Coach of the Year award, many expected him to seek a similar deal.
However, Kerr seems at peace with letting events unfold naturally, saying, “If it’s meant to be for me to keep going, then I’m going to keep going. And if it’s meant to be for the team to move on to somebody else, there will be nothing but gratitude and appreciation”.
The Warriors, currently 17-19, face tough decisions ahead, including Kerr’s contract and the futures of key players like Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Kerr has hinted that he’d love to stay with the Warriors, citing his love for coaching the team and working with Curry and Green .
