Bill Belichick joins the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their new head coach.
Outside the locker room, general manager Jason Licht gave Mayfield a long embrace, expressing the organization’s affections for the journeyman quarterback who had gone from being the first selection to playing for his fourth team in two seasons.
This season, there have been no discussions about a new contract for Mayfield; however, in the winter, his reps will meet with the Bucs to talk about one.
Mayfield, whose 349 passing yards on Sunday were the third-most in a Buccaneers playoff game, remarked, “I love these guys.” All year long, I said that. It’s also real. That’s what I mean. To bring back many important components, to put this back together, and to get it into Year 2 of the system would mean a great deal to me. You can make incredible progress in this regard. That would be wonderful.
“I can’t say enough good things about this organization and the opportunity they gave me this year, but who knows how it will all work out? I’m just grateful and hoping for the best.”
Licht has also stated that the group intends to negotiate a new contract with Evans. Evans completed with over 1,000 receiving yards for the tenth consecutive season, becoming the only player in NFL history to accomplish so. Evans is the franchise’s all-time leader in receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, receptions, and total touchdowns.
Evans agreed with Licht when he told ESPN that Evans becoming a lifelong Buccaneer “would mean everything for the franchise—ownership, all of us.”
“I have expressed my love and want to stay here on record,” said Evans, who finished the playoffs with 147 receiving yards and a score. It would be fantastic if I could finish with just one team, as not many guys manage to do so. However, we’ll see. I’m still working on moving past this setback.”
Evans and his representative, Deryk Gilmore, had given themselves until September 9th, 2023, to finalize a new contract before the 2023–24 regular season began, failing which they would hold off on negotiations until the offseason.
Evans was frustrated, according to sources who spoke with ESPN, that the Bucs did not make an offer before the deadline.
Evans thinks that after the Super Bowl, there will be discussions.
Being a buccaneer has great meaning for Evans and his family. “I wasn’t a Bucs fan growing up or anything, but regardless of what happens, we’ll always be Bucs fans. I adore both the franchise and the city.”
On Monday, Bowles was questioned over Evans’ potential choice of uniform.
“I never give it a second thought. It bothers me to be questioned about it. I have no desire to learn about it. And I sincerely hope that doesn’t occur,” he replied.
Chris Godwin, a wide receiver, expressed his hope that both guys will be back.
Godwin remarked of Evans, who has played beside him since being chosen in 2017, “It would be wonderful.” “It sounds and feels so strange to me that he’s not here. The fact that we’ve arrived at this stage bothers me. However, hopefully, we can continue this.
“Given Mike’s character and skill set, it is understandable to wish that actions had been taken sooner; yet, that is the pragmatic aspect of the situation. That’s beyond our control. But once more, I hope he returns and that we may carry out this activity once more.”
Regarding Mayfield’s possible comeback, Godwin remarked, “He fit right in.” He seemed to match the mold of the other boxers that we had around, individuals going through similar struggles.
“I believe that everyone loves and respects Baker greatly. Although we have no control over the business aspect of it, we hope they can pull it off.”
The Tampa Bay Bucs selected Patriot General Manager to be their new head coach. Following his retirement, Todd Bowles
Bowles said of Mayfield, “He most definitely has.” Mayfield led the Bucs to an NFC South title and a 10-9 record in their first season without Tom Brady. It’s clearly too early to talk about it, but business is business, and Baker had a fantastic year. We love him very much. The boys are crazy about him. We’ll also find out what happens next.
General manager Jason Licht showered Mayfield with affection outside the locker room, emphasizing the organization’s fondness for the journeyman quarterback who had gone from being the first pick to being on his fourth team in two seasons.
There hasn’t been any talk about a new deal for Mayfield this season, but his representatives will meet with the Bucs to negotiate one in the winter.
“I love these guys,” said Mayfield, whose 349 passing yards on Sunday ranked third in a Buccaneers playoff game. I said that for the entire year. It’s authentic as well. That’s my meaning. It would mean a tremendous deal to me to bring back many crucial parts, put this back together, and get it into Year 2 of the system. You’re capable of making amazing strides in this direction. That would be fantastic.
“This organization and the chance it has provided me this year are beyond praise, but who knows how it will all turn out? I’m just appreciative and holding out hope.
Additionally, Licht has said that the group plans to talk to Evans about a new contract. For the tenth time in a row, Evans finished with more than 1,000 receiving yards, making NFL history unique among players. In terms of receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, receptions, and total touchdowns, Evans leads the team all-time.
When Evans stated to ESPN that becoming a lifetime Buccaneer “would mean everything for the franchise, ownership, and all of us,” Evans was in agreement with Licht.
With 147 receiving yards and a touchdown at the end of the playoffs, Evans declared, “I have expressed my love and want to stay here on record.” Not many guys get to complete with only one team, so it would be amazing if I could. But we’ll see. I’m still trying to get over this setback.
Evans and his agent, Deryk Gilmore, agreed that if they couldn’t come to an agreement by September 9th, 2023, before the 2023–24 regular season started, they would continue talks in the offseason.
Sources close to ESPN said that Evans was upset that the Bucs had not extended an offer before the deadline.
Evans believes such conversations will take place following the Super Bowl.
For Evans and his family, being a buccaneer means a lot. “Even though I wasn’t a Bucs fan growing up or anything, we’ll always be Bucs supporters. I love the place and the franchise.
Bowles was questioned on Monday over Evans’ possible uniform preference.
“I never think twice about it. I find it inconvenient to be asked about it. I don’t want to find out more about it. And I really hope that doesn’t happen,” he answered.
Wide receiver Chris Godwin expressed his optimism that both players would return.
Godwin said, “It would be amazing,” regarding Evans, who has been playing next to him since he was selected in 2017. “I find it quite unusual that he isn’t here, both in sound and feeling. The fact that we’ve reached this point irritates me. But maybe we can carry on with this.
It is reasonable to wish that steps had been taken sooner, given Mike’s personality and skill set, but that is the realistic reality of the circumstances. That is not within our power. However, I sincerely hope he comes back and that we can do this again.
Godwin said of Mayfield, “He fit right in,” in reference to a potential return. He appeared to be a typical boxer, someone going through comparable hardships to the others we had around.
Everyone, in my opinion, adores and highly appreciates Baker. We hope they can pull it off even if we have no control over the business side of things.
