Matthew Derrick Williams, head coach of the San Francisco Giants, just announced his departure due to…
As part of the staff of new manager Bob Melvin, Matt Williams is rejoining the San Francisco Giants as the third base coach.
On Friday, the team revealed its coaching staff.
Williams played infield with San Francisco for the first ten of his seventeen major league seasons. He was a four-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove, and three-time Silver Slugger winner. Throughout the 2014โ15 season, he led the Washington Nationals to a 179โ145 record.
“To start with, he is an excellent baseball coach. However, bringing him home is really important to me,” Melvin texted The Associated Press. “Both our players and fans are aware that he is a giant.”
After winning the NL West and a franchise-record 107 games in 2021, the Giants missed the playoffs for the second straight season. This past month, Melvin was chosen manager to succeed Gabe Kapler, who was sacked.
Midway through April, Williams, 57, returned to the Padres after undergoing surgery to treat colon cancer. A day after opening day, on March 31, he underwent surgery following his diagnosis during spring training.
Along with returner Justin Viele, assistant hitting coach Pedro Guerrero, and veteran major league outfielder Pat Burrell, Melvin welcomes his old bench coach Ryan Christenson from the Athletics and Padres back to the Bay Area.
Christenson joined Melvin as associate manager this year after serving as his bench coach in San Diego in 2022.
