Brad Holmes, the general manager of the Detroit Lions, attempted to appease the supporters by referring to his work as a “retooling” of the current roster when he took over in 2021. Even he is acknowledging that it was a complete reconstruction four years later.
Earlier this year, Holmes stated, “I recall I used the word’retool’ and I got slaughtered because I probably should have used the word rebuild, but they were wondering how long the build is going to take.”
As it happens, it took roughly three years. The Lions had the fourth-best odds to win the title this year going into OTAs; they were only a half a football game away from the Super Bowl the year before.
