As he approaches his 40th birthday and the end of his NBA career, LeBron James has begun contemplating his post-basketball life. Having signed a two-year contract with a player option for the next season, James likely has only a couple of years left in the NBA. Consequently, he is now focusing on his plans for retirement.
In an interview with Craig Melvin on TODAY, James opened up about his thoughts on retirement and his legacy. “I hope it’s not just talking about basketball. For me, what I do in our community and the people that I inspire all over the world is what I want a lot of my legacy to be talked about… But if my legacy is only talking about the game of basketball, then I failed in my mission, so — we’ll see.”
This perspective is intriguing coming from a man who has been the face of basketball for the past two decades. Can someone so deeply associated with the NBA for over 20 years truly be known for something beyond the sport?
While he is expected to engage in various non-basketball activities, James has expressed a clear desire to own an NBA team one day. For someone as driven and ambitious as LeBron, the opportunity to own a team would be hard to resist, despite his wish to build a legacy outside of basketball.
