Nicolás Jarry Opens Up About His Suspension and Draws Contrast with Sinner’s Case
Chilean tennis star Nicolás Jarry has revisited the most difficult chapter of his career — the 2020 suspension that sidelined him for nearly a year. In a candid reflection, Jarry compared his experience to the recent case involving current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
Sinner reportedly tested positive twice for Clostebol in March of last year but continued competing while the case was being handled discreetly. The public only became aware of the situation in August. In stark contrast, Jarry faced immediate consequences after testing positive for two banned substances during the 2019 Davis Cup Finals.
The Chilean served an 11-month suspension, forcing him to miss the entire 2020 season — including all four Grand Slams — and eventually return to the sport at the Futures level, something he hadn’t done in over four years.
Jarry expressed disappointment over the disparity in treatment and media coverage between his case and Sinner’s. He pointed out that the substances detected in his system originated from cross-contaminated vitamins manufactured at a Brazilian lab — a fact that was eventually confirmed but didn’t shield him from the harsh penalty.
During his time away from the sport, Jarry returned home and went through what he described as the darkest period of his life. Struggling with depression, he sought psychiatric help to cope with the emotional toll of the suspension. Despite the adversity, the former top-40 player has fought his way back, using the painful experience as fuel for his comeback.
