New York Yankees claim Colombian infielder Jeter Downs from the Nationals on waivers
The New York Yankees remain highly active in the MLB offseason, and on this occasion, they decided to reinforce their infield for the 2024 campaign and have claimed Colombian Jeter Downs from the Washington Nationals on waivers.
Shortstop, third baseman, and second baseman Jeter Downs was a Boston Red Sox prospect who was a minor-level player for the Nationals in 2023. Despite the overcrowding, the Bronx Bombers have chosen to gamble on one more infielder, but they are cautioning that this might be a replay of the injuries that their players have sustained on a regular basis in recent campaigns.
The Colombian played in 60 games in the minor levels for the Washington franchise last season, posting an offensive line of.222/.363/.356 with 17 extra-base hits, 20 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases. He also took part in six Major League Baseball games with the Nationals.
Given his lack of MLB experience, Downs will probably begin the season in the minor leagues. Manager Aaron Boone may call him late in the season to invite him to make his Yankees debut.
