Lions end long drought and win their first division title since ’93
It’s awesome. Really, Goff said, it’s cool.Being able to look back on it with the clarity that comes from having accomplished something that teams had not done in thirty years. This 2023 squad succeeded in ending that run, and we will ensure a home playoff game. Well, we have some work to do the following week and the week after that, and then we’ll see where we end up.
With 58 seconds left and the Vikings driving for the potentially game-winning touchdown, Ifeatu Melifonwu’s interception of a Nick Mullens pass at the Lions’ 5-yard line sealed the victory. Goff passed for 257 yards and a touchdown, and rookie Joshmyr Gibbs rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Mullens had made four interceptions throughout the contest.
That was my first professional interception, and I thank God for it, Melifonwu said. It was about time. When I spotted Justin Jefferson in the middle of a post, I sprang over the quarterback. As Kerby [Joseph] obtained two sooner, the outcome was inevitable. It was almost time for me.
In addition, Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown tied Tyreek Hill for the league record with his ninth 100-yard receiving performance of the year. In the end, he caught 12 passes for 106 yards and 1 touchdown. He said that following the back-and-forth argument, he was left speechless.
For us, it was quite significant. When you think about it, thirty years is really a long period, according to St. Brown. For one thing, we knew it. We could easily access it. It was in this place. This was an opportunity. We were unable to ignore it.
Goff claimed before the game that the current Lions squad didn’t “carry the weight of the last 30 years here” due to their lack of a division championship. But head coach Dan Campbell—a former player for the Lions himself—made it a point to make sure the boys understood the unique opportunity to complete this season-long goal that was in front of them.
I’m happy for all of them. According to Campbell, this has been a long time coming. Alright, guy, I’m happy of all the Lions supporters out there who have been waiting years for this. That is also for you. I am aware that a lot has happened. You’re worthy of that. Furthermore, it’s not finished. That is only one example.
Following the win, Campbell ushered in team president Rod Wood and owner Sheila Ford Hamp into the locker room. There, he called Pro Bowl centre Frank Ragnow and offensive lineman Taylor Decker, the longest-tenured Lion, to the team for recognition after years of suffering within the organisation.
It signifies everything, according to Ford Hamp. “It’s incredible.”
The celebration featured the squad blasting Lil Yachty’s song Minneapolis in the visitors’ locker room, which brought Decker and Ragnow closer than before. According to Ragnow, there is a great deal of repressed emotion behind the desire to be recognised as a team and to be viewed as a winner. I think I’ve cried more today than I have in my entire career. Simply put, it’s because I value it greatly.
When the Lions defeated the Green Bay Packers in the final week of the regular season to finish 10-6 and secure the NFC Central division, their 83-year-old coach, Wayne Fontes, was leading the team. He’s been a big fan of Campbell’s for so long that he can hardly remember how he felt at the time.
Best wishes. Dan Campbell performed admirably. Coach Fontes is exceptional, the player told ESPN. The football squad has an excellent coach. Dan Campbell is perhaps one of the best coaches that have come around in a very long time in Detroit, and his assistant coaches do an excellent job as well. I will continue to support them and believe they will succeed because, once again, they have quality players, a strong coaching staff, and a competent coach.
Fontes said with a giggle that thirty years is a long time ago. Dan Campbell has done an excellent job, and he deserves a hearty “attaboy,” “way to go,” or whatever. That is something I firmly believe.
