Premier League rule could block Newcastle United from signing £18 million midfielder, as an inquiry’made”
The Chelsea midfielder may not be available for Newcastle United to sign due to Premier League regulations. Andrey Santos, a midfielder for Chelsea, was cut from his season-long loan at Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle United have been linked with a bid for him.
The Magpies kept a close eye on the Brazilian prior to his March £18 million transfer to Stamford Bridge. Santos played his final season with Vasco da Gama before taking a summer loan to play for Forest.
But the Blues have decided to return Santos five months ahead of schedule, following just two outings. Although there have been rumors that Newcastle has made an inquiry, a deal looks incredibly unlikely.
Premier League regulations state that “no more than four loans may be registrable in the same season, and no more than one may be from the same club at any one time.
Lewis Hall is the only player currently on loan from Chelsea to United. If specific performance-related requirements are satisfied at the end of the season, there is a requirement to make the relocation permanent for an initial £28 million.
Consequently, Newcastle’s sole options for registering Santos are to either extend Hall’s contract or cancel it entirely. The second option is to sign Santos long-term, but because Chelsea just recently acquired the highly-regarded 19-year-old, that scenario is quite unlikely to occur.
Eddie Howe, the head coach of United, is willing to add players to his midfield this month, and Kalvin Phillips of Manchester City is one of the players who has been strongly linked. Sandro Tonali, a £52 million summer acquisition for Howe, is currently serving an eight-month suspension from football due to his involvement in illicit betting.
