Zac Taylor bengals head coach suspended a player today
On Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reported that the league had lowered his penalty from three games to two.
Perryman was suspended due to “multiple infractions of playing regulations intended to protect the health and safety of players,” as highlighted by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. It was his seventh helmet foul of the season when he hit Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, earning him a penalty.
Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper reported that this season, the NFL and NFL Players Association designated Derrick Brooks and James Thrash, two former players, to hear these appeals. Earlier this year, safety Kareem Jackson of the Denver Broncos got his four-game punishment lowered to only two.
Given the decision on Wednesday, Perryman can return to action one game sooner than expected, but he will still miss two games as the Texans compete for a postseason berth.
Houston’s next three home games are against the Arizona Cardinals and Jacksonville Jaguars. The linebacker is eligible to play again when the squad plays the Denver Broncos in Week 13.
“You bent down and struck the receiver with force in the shoulder and then the head/neck region,” NFL vice president of football operations Jon Runyan wrote to Perryman, informing him of the punishment, according to ESPN. “The unlawful contact might have been prevented, and you had an open route to your opponent.”
Runyan also brought up the repetitive infractions, but J.J. Watt, a legend of the Texans, objected to that being taken into consideration while making the decision:
Perryman is a starter on Houston’s defense and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021 while playing for the Las Vegas Raiders. In six games thus far this season, he has 41 tackles.
Expect linebacker Christian Harris to get more playing time while he’s out.
