After Alabama’s success in the College Football Playoff, backup quarterback Tyler Buchner says he would return to Notre Dame to play lacrosse.
Despite not having formally registered on the transfer site, Buchner—who started his football career with the Fighting Irish and started as the starting quarterback for the 2022 season—announced on social media on Wednesday that he will be returning to Notre Dame to complete his degree in May. After spring practice this year, he transferred to Alabama, where he was reunited with offensive coach Tommy Rees.
Buchner commented on X, “I’ll be finishing what I started and continuing my initial commitment to Alabama Football through the playoffs.” “I sincerely appreciate everyone’s unwavering support.”
In Week 3 against South Florida, Buchner got the start for Alabama but had a rough game, hitting just 5 of 14 passes for 34 yards. The next week, Jalen Milroe took back the starting job and led Alabama to an SEC championship and a postseason berth. The Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential on January 1st will host the CFP Semifinal between the fourth-seeded Crimson Tide and No. 1 Michigan.
Buchner, a native of San Diego, attended Notre Dame for two years and finished with 949 passing yards, six touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He had an injury during a Week 2 loss to Marshall in 2022, but he made a comeback to lead Notre Dame over South Carolina in the Gator Bowl with a 273-yard touchdown throw.
In high school, Buchner excelled as a midfielder in lacrosse. In lacrosse, Notre Dame won its maiden national championship in May. The team will play their first games of 2024 in February.
Buchner rejoins the Irish in the footsteps of another former Notre Dame quarterback, Drew Pyne, who is currently a player for Arizona State. Pyne intends to graduate as well, but he won’t pick up a football until he’s left Notre Dame.
