Anthony Joshua has an odd training…
In August, Joshua, the former heavyweight world champion of the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO, squared off against Robert Helenius at the O2 Arena in London. According to recent reports, Joshua spent £2000 on a dark retreat experience.
He locked himself in a dark room for four days, trying to decompress and spend all of his time in his own thoughts. Posting about his plans on social media, the 34-year-old said he was ready to enjoy this time alone with a friend in different rooms.
Athletes such as Aaron Rodgers of the NFL use a type of meditation called a “darkness retreat” to help them focus. When describing his personal experience with this practice, Rodgers said that it was a good reset for the body and the mind, though maybe a little longer than needed.
Though there have been rumors of Joshua facing Deontay Wilder after his victory over Helenius, his future plans are still unknown. Looking back on his remarkable career, which included winning multiple world titles and an Olympic gold medal, Joshua acknowledges that he struggled with self-doubt and that mental toughness is important, especially after defeats.
