Briton seals 3-1 win with 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (1) victory over Diane Parry
- Earlier, Katie Boulter put GB 2-1 ahead with a 7-5, 6-0 win.
The Billie Jean King team from Great Britain made no secret of their underdog status and the tough task ahead of them as they took on a strong France squad on foreign grounds. Their early position on the verge of a 0–2 deficit, which they would have been unlikely to overcome, only served to confirm their apparent inferiority. Emma Raducanu, however, rose to the situation magnificently, playing arguably some of her finest tennis in the last 2.5 years to help Great Britain advance to the Billie Jean King Cup finals. The British team stunned France 3-1 with two outstanding victories.
Raducanu finished the tie with yet another display of brilliance, having begun with an unexpected victory over Caroline Garcia on Friday. She performed at a very high level and won 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1) after fending off a last-ditch effort by Diane Parry.
The top-ranked player in the United Kingdom, Katie Boulter, lost to Parry 6-2, 6-0 in the first rubber of her tour-level clay court match. However, she recovered the following day, winning 7-5, 6-0 against Clara Burel to give her side a 2-1 advantage. Raducanu completed the task.
Raducanu remarked, “I don’t know who said Brits can’t play on clay.” But we kind of tested it today to see if we could. Katie performed a fantastic job this morning, and knowing that we were [ahead] 2-1 coming into this match was really helpful.
Great Britain entered the BJK Cup that year as a wildcard, despite the fact that they made it to the semi-finals. Under the present structure, this is the first time they have advanced to the finals on merit, and the triumph is among the biggest best-of-five rubber victories in the event this century for Great Britain.
Drama was present in the tie as well. Following Raducanu’s comeback from a 3-6, 0-2 deficit against Garcia on Friday night to level the scores, more suspense emerged on Saturday morning when France’s captain, Julien Benneteau, decided to substitute the inexperienced world No. 46, Burel, for Garcia. It proved to be a really bad decision. Boulter had made up her mind to play the attacking style of tennis that she had veered away from in her opening encounter after losing to Parry. She won nine straight games after falling down 4-5 to seal the victory, and she subsequently called Raducanu an inspiration.
The most crucial thing was that I came out today and persisted in my struggle. Boulter stated, “I just played my way.” After Emma’s amazing performance last night, I actually received a very beautiful message from her that truly made my day. That was my main source of strength for today. I received a few kind comments from her, which is very significant coming from someone of her caliber. She’s a huge star, and I admire everything she’s accomplished in the sport, as well as the way she plays and never gives up.
Raducanu and Parry, both extraordinarily gifted 21-year-olds, rose to the occasion and played at an exceptionally high level right away, providing the ultimate example of that relentlessness. Parry unleashed her powerful topspin forehand while showcasing her entire repertoire of variations with net incursions and deft drop shots, while Raducanu remained stationary at the baseline, taking the ball early, destroying second serves, and hitting her forehand wonderfully.
Raducanu had performed admirably, similar to her first match, even though she had lost the first set. Parry’s level fell, but Raducanu’s remained high and aggressive. Raducanu led 5-2 at the end and had two match points, giving the impression that she was winning quickly. Rather, Parry battled to save her own life. She made it to 5-5, 15-40 on Raducanu’s serve after trailing 2–5.
The British commented, “It was a pretty massive effort.” “Recovering from missing the match points was really tough.” I couldn’t be too hard on myself because I had earned that point in the match by going for my shots. Raducanu demonstrated her mental toughness and fortitude in the closing seconds, as she was about to suffer one of the hardest losses of her professional life, by rallying to finish with a superb victory and a strong tie-break. In the process, she emphasized her resolve to accomplish much more and provided a powerful reminder of what she had already accomplished.
“If everything goes wrong, it comes down to a decisive doubles match,” Raducanu stated. “But naturally, I didn’t want to go to that stage because their doubles combination is among the greatest in the world, if not the best. Making it to the finals makes me very delighted, and I believe that we merit it after all those attempts.
