Sal Licata of WFAN believes the Jets shouldn’t select a weapon for Aaron Rodgers with their tenth pick in the NFL Draft on Thursday. He desires that Gang Green select his heir.
A similar approach would be similar to what the Packers took in 2020 when they selected Jordan Love in the first round. Many people think that this is what caused Green Bay and Rodgers’ friendship to deteriorate.
Would the Jets take the same kind of risk? Licata is unconcerned. He feels that rather than Rodgers, New York should be concentrating on their future.
On his WFAN midday broadcast, Licata stated, via Audacy, “You’re picking this high, you’d hope to never pick that high again.” They have such an incorrect perspective that it isn’t even worth talking about because it isn’t going to happen.
“Grab the QB and make a smooth transfer. Give him a year or two to learn under Rodgers, and then let him go. That is the perfect circumstance. Even if he falls to them, they won’t do it because Rodgers would have a tantrum. I would be selecting for the future rather than the present. You should never base a draft selection on the near future.
Michael Penix Jr. of Washington, who guided the 2023 Huskies to a 13-0 regular season and the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship game (which they lost), is the quarterback Licata has his sights set on.
According to some draft gurus, the Jets will select a player who can either throw to or shield Aaron Rodgers. According to ESPN’s Mel Kiper, they can trade down to select an offensive tackle like Penn State’s Olu Fashanu or Oregon State’s Taliese Fuaga “and pick up extra capital.” Alternatively, they may remain stationary and draft a player such as Brock Bowers, a tremendous wide receiver who can work in tandem with a tackler to slow down an edge rusher or establish an advantage in the run game.
As the team’s success in 2024 will determine general manager Joe Douglas and coach Robert Saleh’s futures with the team, supporting Rodgers appears to be the most likely course of action.
