Joe Burrow: After accepting a new $55 million-a-year contract, the quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals rises to the top of the NFL’s pay scale.

After Cincinnati’s 2021 campaign concluded with a 23-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Joe Burrow guided the team to two consecutive AFC North wins and a Super Bowl appearance. Thanks to his new contract, the Bengals quarterback now earns more annually than both Justin Herbert and Lamar Jackson combined.

Watch some of the best moments from Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow after he inked a contract to become the highest-paid player in the NFL.

According to numerous sources, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who inked a five-year, $275 million contract deal, is now the highest-paid athlete in the National Football League.

Burrow will make an average of $55 million annually from the deal, which includes more than $219 million in guaranteed money. This puts him ahead of players like Lamar Jackson and Justin Herbert, who also inked new deals in the summer.

Following the 2021 season, which concluded with a 23–20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Burrow guided Cincinnati to two consecutive AFC North titles and a Super Bowl appearance. The Bengals hadn’t made it to the Super Bowl since 1989, and they hadn’t even won a postseason game since 1990.

Cincinnati finished 12-4 last year, with Burrow nominated for his first Pro Bowl after throwing for 4,475 yards and a career-high 35 touchdowns.

Early in the training camp this summer, Burrow hurt his calf muscle, keeping him out of action until last week. According to him, he is expected to start Sunday’s Bengals season opener against the Cleveland Browns.

Burrow told reporters on Wednesday, “This is where I want to be for the rest of my career.” “You’ve witnessed the actions of Coach Zac Taylor and the front office during their tenure here. A tiny portion of that is me.

“I’m thrilled to be involved with that. Additionally, there are amazing people in the locker room that work hard every day, are eager to show off their skills, and are eager to do it in Cincinnati.”

Burrow entered the quarterback market in late July when Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers signed a $262.5 million, five-year agreement.

The $260 million, five-year agreement ($52 million average) that Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens inked in April was eclipsed by Herbert’s overall value and $52.5 million average per season. Deshaun Watson consented to a $230 million contract with Cleveland that was fully guaranteed in 2022.

The quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs and the current MVP of the Super Bowl, Patrick Mahomes, is in the third year of a $450 million, ten-year contract, which is the biggest deal ever for a quarterback.

Over his three-year career, Burrow—the first overall pick by the Bengals in the 2020 NFL Draft—has thrown for 11,774 yards, 82 touchdowns, and 31 interceptions.

After undergoing season-ending knee surgery during his rookie season in 2020, he returned to the NFL as one of the finest quarterbacks and was named the 2021 AP Comeback Player of the Year.
