Boston — Joe Mazzulla is no longer the head coach in transition. On Thursday, the 34-year-old’s interim tag was lifted by the Celtics, who also announced Mazzulla’s appointment as the team’s 19th head coach and gave him a contract extension.
Mazzulla has proven himself worthy of the position as well, leading the Celtics to an NBA-best 42-17 record so far this year. The Celtics were the NBA’s best team going into the All-Star break, a distinction they have essentially kept all season.
“Joe is a tremendously talented coach and leader, as he has demonstrated,” Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens stated. “He possesses a special talent for energizing a space surrounding a goal. We are thrilled that he has agreed to guide us into the future and appreciate the work he has done to help us get here.”

With Ime Udoka out for the season due to suspension, Mazzulla has taken care of almost everything that has come his way and the Celtics’ since then. On Thursday, he took over as head coach formally. After taking over a club that made it to the NBA Finals the previous season, Mazzulla has had the Celtics playing at a high level ever since.
Boston began the season with a record of 18-4 and was named Coach of the Month for October and November by the Mazzulla Eastern Conference. With a defensive rating of 110.6, the Boston defense presently sits fourth in the NBA, while Jayson Tatum has been playing at an MVP caliber.
Mazzulla is now traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah, for the NBA All-Star Game, where he will coach Team Giannis. The product of Johnston, Rhode Island, is the seventh coach in Celtics history to lead an All-Star squad, and he is only the third first-year head coach to do so in the previous 24 seasons.
