Canelo Alvarez super middleweight champion, Just Announced His Departure
Canelo Alvarez is still a great boxer, but Padraig McCrory thinks he may not be at his best anymore.
Alvarez, who is 33 years old, is still the unchallenged super middleweight champion after 64 professional fights. But in 2022, he lost to Dmitry Bivol in the light heavyweight division, which marked his first loss since Floyd Mayweather ten years prior.
Although he has won three fights since then, neither his mandatory defense against John Ryder nor his trilogy triumph over Gennadiy Golovkin gave much reason to believe he was back to his best. Still, a victory over Jermell Charlo in September of last year was far more commanding.
Canelo has not yet chosen his next opponent, but there are still rumors that he will take on Jermell’s Jermall, my brother, in May.
On February 24, McCrory will compete against Edgar Berlanga on DAZN.com; nonetheless, he eventually aspires to take on Alvarez.
McCrory told BoxingScene, “As a fighting man and as a boxer, I completely feel I can beat the man.”
“He’s demonstrated that he might not be the same boxer that he was,” the speaker continued, “but I think he’s exceptional; I think he’s a superstar.”
