Chiefs Kingdom Quarter Back Patrick Mahomes announced his departure after his daughter’s birthday today.
Punter Dustin Colquitt is leaving the Kansas City Chiefs after 15 years of service. The decision was made early on Tuesday morning, and although it is disappointing, it is also not shocking. Given the large sums of money the Chiefs had paid Colquitt over his career, the team had to make savings wherever possible on the contracts that needed to be awarded in the upcoming two offseasons.
When Colquitt was chosen in the third round of the NFL Draft in 2005, the Chiefs were undoubtedly teased for the selection. Who enters the third with a punter?
The joke ultimately fell on those individuals, as Colquitt departs the team as a Kansas City Chiefs legend. After 15 years of team punting, he was awarded a Super Bowl ring.
Colquitt missed two games in 2008, the last time he punted for the Chiefs; thus, this opens up the position to real competition for the first time in more than ten years.Tommy Townsend, a UDFA punter, was well-liked by the squad, according to Peter Schrager of Good Morning Football.
Townsend will face off against Tyler Newsome, a Chargers player from 2019. Cheers to a contest at Punter!
Colquitt rode the wave with this company since he was brought in in 2005 and was always a class act, so it will be strange to see him out there no more. He was perhaps the best player in 2012 and one of the top players on some of those teams from the 2000s, and at least he rode out with a Super Bowl ring.
Highlighting a punter may sound absurd, but Colquitt was very important to the team and the supporters. I’m sure he’ll be inducted into the Chiefs Ring of Honor eventually.
