Michael Malone goes hard against the Lakers
Malone seemed to be referring to James himself when he said he is considering retirement in an interview he gave after the Finals series ended. This is because it was LeBron James himself who hinted at a possible retirement after the purple and gold team was swept by the Nuggets themselves in the Western Conference Finals after they jumped from the play-in and knocked out the Memphis Grizzlies and the then-champion Golden State Warriors.
Coach Malone went to the Pat McCafee show and mentioned that “the reality is if they [news outlets] don’t [cover the Nuggets as NBA champions], we don’t give a s**t. We believe in each other, we know what we are doing every single day on this journey. To celebrate with the people you love and care about, that’s what we all work so hard for.” while jokingly adding “Speaking of the Lakers, I just want you guys to know – this is breaking news. I’m thinking about retiring, so don’t tell anybody,”
As a response, LeBronposted a story on Instagram with a picture of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who was his teammate in the 2020 Lakers title and with whom he had friction during the final series. KCP has been one of the strongest critics of LeBron’s performance and had some run-ins with him and Anthony Davis throughout the series.

In addition, James posted a picture on Instagram, possibly directed at all his critics in Denver, with a harsh message “In Europe for the last past few weeks minding my business and I hear I’m on your mind that much huh??? I mean I guess I see why. But Wave the flag on these lames!! Please make being player cool again cause the lame machine is at an all-time high. Enjoy your light but just know I’m the SUN. I stay on forever!
The contractual issue is not a problem for the Lakers, as LeBron has a current contract for next season and an option to remain active in the 2024-25 campaign, so if he decides to continue playing, he already has significant motivation to compete as well.
