The men’s USL League One team at Lexington Sporting Club has named Darren Powell as their new head coach for the upcoming second season. Powell, who is from Nottingham, England, offers the team a wealth of coaching expertise.
Powell is an experienced athlete who most recently worked for Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Inter Miami CF as the Director of Player Development and First Team Assistant Coach. Powell is coming to Lexington, South Carolina. Powell has had head coaching positions with Fort Lauderdale CF in USL League One (2021) and Inter Miami CF II in MLS Next Pro (2022).

Powell was a multi-position coach before joining Inter Miami CF. He became head coach of San Antonio FC from 2016 to 2019, leading the team to the USL Championship from the start and qualifying for the playoffs in 2017. Additionally, from 2014 to 2016, he worked as the Academy Director for Orlando City, SC.
Powell also held the position of head coach at Elon University from 2005 to 2014, during which he was recognized as the most successful men’s soccer coach in school history and inducted into the Elon Hall of Fame. Powell served as Greensboro College’s head coach from 1998 to 2001, then as Elon’s assistant coach at UNC Greensboro from 2001 to 2004.
Following the conclusion of Lexington SC’s first professional season in the USL League One, Powell moves to Lexington. Powell is enthusiastic about the club’s expansion and its future prospects.
