Eagles Head Coach Update: Is Philadelphia Nearing Another Hiring?
It is anticipated that the Philadelphia Eagles will bolster their defensive coaching staff once again.
Philadelphia: Information on the new coaching staff of the Philadelphia Eagles has been trickling out slowly.
As of right now, the Eagles have only stated that Vic Fangio will serve as the defensive coordinator. Respected offensive line coach and run game coordinator Jeff Stoutland will continue to be a member of the offensive staff, according to multiple NFL sources that have also revealed Kellen Moore will be the one with the “new ideas” for the offense.
Former DC of Seattle Fangio’s new defensive line coach will be Cliff Hurtt, while Karl Scott, who was said to be headed by the Seahawks, is expected to have a role in the secondary. But when Seattle selected former Baltimore DC Mike McDonald to be its next coach and will remain with the Seahawks, Scott made a complete 180-degree turn.
Kasper served as the defensive quality control coach for the Eagles under Nick Sirianni and Jonathan Gannon in 2021–2022 before moving south with Fangio last season. This is a good bridge for a young coach who should have some allegiance to Sirianni returning during a turbulent period.
It also suggests that Fangio wants his defensive staff to be built up similarly to how the Dolphins were. Fangio’s staff at Miami included safety (Kasper), cornerbacks coach/passing game specialist Sam Madison, and passing game coordinator/secondary coach Ronaldo Hill.
Early on, there was speculation that Hill may join Fangio, but an NFL source claimed Scott was targeted for the position of secondary coach/passing game coordinator. That may make Hill or longtime Fangio consigliere Ed Donatell, a seasoned coach, a candidate for supporting roles. A guy to keep an eye on is Steve Donatell, Ed’s son, who spent the previous season as a defensive assistant with the Dolphins.
Former DCs Joe Barry and Mike Caldwell interviewed for the position of linebacker, but it’s probable that they’re holding off on signing a contract until all coordinating alternatives have been explored.
Hurtt’s presence results in the dismissal of play-caller and senior defensive assistant Matt Patricia, as well as defensive line coach Tracy Rocker. Additionally, LB coach D.J. Eliot is probably a one-and-done player unless Fangio is turned down by many possibilities.
The condition of quality coach Mike DiAngelo is unknown, and the 2023 secondary coaches—D.K. McDonald, his assistant Taver Johnson, and nickels coach Ronell Williams—are likewise on the downward path.
Although offense is moving more slowly, most NFL observers think Doug Nussmeier—who coached Moore at both the Dallas and LA Chargers—will eventually take over as quarterback coach.

At his season-ending press conference, Sirianni also gave the impression that Kevin Patullo, his passing game coordinator and associate head coach, was safe.
In the meantime, DeVonta Smith hinted in an interview with Kay Adams earlier this week that receivers coach Aaron Moorehead would make a comeback, and it makes sense to anticipate Roy Istvan returning as Stoutland’s assistant.
So far, Marcus Brady, a senior offensive assistant, and Alex Tanney, the quarterbacks coach, who was allowed to shop around, are anticipated.
Running back and assistant head coach Jemal Singleton, tight ends coach Jason Michael, and run game specialist and assistant TE coach T.J. Paganetti, as well as quality control coach Eric Dickerson, are all presumed to be targets for return by Sirianni.
Following a stellar season in the third phase for Philadelphia, the special teams triad of coordinator Michael Clay and his assistants, Joe Pannunzio and Tyler Brown, should be secure.
