Wide receiver A.J. Brown was released by the Philadelphia Eagles today, a move that frees up $6.5 million in salary cap space..
After eight years with the Minnesota Vikings, Kendricks inked a two-year contract with the Chargers last season. He finished second on the squad with 117 tackles and appeared in 15 games, 14 of which he started. Kendricks also recorded a forced fumble, seven tackles for loss, and three and a half sacks.
The Chargers are about $19 million over the $255.4 million salary cap even with Kendricks’ departure; free agency is scheduled to start on Wednesday. The team that general manager Joe Hortiz and coach Jim Harbaugh took over featured four players with 2024 salary cap figures of at least $32 million: wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, and defenders Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa.
It’s still an ongoing project. During last week’s NFL Scouting Combine, Hortiz spoke on the roster review process and remarked, “The coaching staff basically just got settled.” “Clearly, there was a slight increase in the salary cap—a little bit more than I believe everyone had anticipated. We do have some flexibility—a little bit more flexibility, at least. We’ll keep discussing that over the course of the next several weeks, and soon we’ll have a strategy in place.
